Nothing beats the buzz in the air when you are on the edge of something exciting. That is exactly how women of the 1910s felt like. Women began to feel complacent in their traditional roles as housewife. While some opposed this desire to change, others pressed onward to improve the image the world had of women.

Throughout the 1910s, women focused on different areas to improvement. Many fought for education reform, pressuring universities to allow female students. The women’s suffrage movement was in full swing as they held conventions and picketed the White House. The National Woman’s Party and the National American Women Suffrage Association were eager to make a changes in politics and showcase women’s capabilities.

Although women were not granted the right to vote until 1920, it would have been impossible without the work down in the 1910s. Some women were against voting like the characters in BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR. They felt that women shouldn’t vote because they were too emotional (BERNICE).

Other changes were occurring in fashion. In the 1910s, knickerbockers, petticoats and corsets were the traditional undergarments. Edwardian style dresses were worn, usually with pale tops and dark skirts made of linen, cotton, silks or high grade cottons depending on your social class. Many women had a variety of outfits such as the day outfit, afternoon dress, tea gowns and evening dresses. Their hair was in pulled in Gibson Girl fashion.

These trends started changing throughout this decade as the popularity of bobbed hair and scandalous clothing grew. Bobbing ones hair was seen as outrageous and unacceptable at first. Many women ended up with broken engagements and destroyed marriages after taking part in this social trend.

In BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR, many of these aspects are seen as the teens navigate 1912. Bernice Harvey has a tough choice to make. As the teens around her become comfortable with rebelling against the traditional norms of the 1910s, she has to choose if she will do the same. How will she do it? The roles of these women’s lives are about to change as they enter the roaring 20s, so come see BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR to see if the characters will float or flop!
