AUDITION WITH LYRIC THEATRE

Lyric's Auditions

Lyric encourages and will consider actors from diverse backgrounds and genders for all roles in all productions.  An accompanist will be provided at all auditions. Unless specifically stated, no acapella singing is permitted.
Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma works with Actors’ Equity Association under the University/Resident Theatres Association (URTA) and Guest Artist contracts. Union performers work alongside non-union company members.

Character Breakdown:

Mary Poppins (Sides) – Offer Out.

Bert (Sides)The narrator of the story, is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man. Looking for a good tapper.

George Banks (Sides)The father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding “precision and order” in his household, he is a pipe-and-slippers man who doesn’t have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. A baritone, George may speak-sing as necessary.

Winifred Banks (Sides)George’s wife and Jane and Michael’s mother. A former actress, she is a loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband’s desire to only associate with “the best people” as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she’s not up to the job of “being Mrs. Banks,” yet, she is, and more. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone.

Jane (Sides)The high-spirited daughter of Mr. and Mr. Banks is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness.

Michael (Sides)The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents.

Katie Nanna – Jane and Micahel’s nanny at the beginning of the show. Overwhelmed and upset, she has absolutely had her fill of the Banks children.

Miss Lark – The haughty next-door neighbor of the Banks family who treats her dog, Willoughby, as if she were a child.

Admiral Boom – A retired Royal Navy man and neighbor of the Banks family. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor, Miss Lark. Can be any vocal range as needed. If Admiral Bloom doubles as the Bank Chairman, he can be a baritone.

Mrs. Brill (Sides)The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harrassed,  always complaining that the house is understaffed. Intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn’t have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular.

Robertson Ay (Sides)The houseboy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, never gets things right and believes to be useless. Physical comedy is helpful.

Park Keeper – Uniformed and officious, makes sure no one breaks park regulations. Their life is defined by rules, but secretly hankers after his childhood.

Neleus – The statue posed with a dolphin in the park. Neleus was separated from their father, Poseidon, and misses him very much. A small and lonely being, is very happy to befriend Jane and Michael.

Bank Chairman (Sides)The head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed, is an Edwardian stuffed-shirt. Can speak/sing lines if necessary.

Von Hussler – A businessman seeking a loan from the bank for a shady business deal.  A German accent.

John Northbrook – An honest businessman seeking a loan to build a factory for his community. Speaks with an accent from Northern England.

Bird Woman (Sides)Covered in a patchwork of old shawls, and their pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. They try to sell their crumbs for the birds. There can be a gruff, folksy quality to the voice that reflects the hardness of life.

Mrs. Corry (Sides)Owns a magical gingerbread shop. She is a mysterious woman of knowledge.

Miss Andrew (Sides)George’s overbearing and scary nanny. With a bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, a bully who only knows one way of doing things – their way. A soprano with an alto belt, there can be some heaviness to the voice along with range.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

Frankie Valli (Sides) – a strong tenor with sweet and strong falsetto and be able to sing in the style of Frankie Valli; strong tenor to high A or Bb plus strong falsetto up to treble G; charismatic and charming; must be a very strong actor (comfortable with narrative text) and have a gritty side as well as a polished veneer; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies. 

Nick Massi (Sides) – a strong bass/baritone voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; a quiet dreamer who longs for life after The Four Seasons.

Bob Gaudio (Sides) – a strong tenor/baritone voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; an intelligent, sensitive, and introspective musical prodigy. 

Tommy DeVito (Sides) – a strong tenor/baritone voice; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must be comfortable with narrative text; ability to play guitar a very strong plus; a natural born leader with an appealing, bad-boy quality. 

Bob Crewe (Sides) – intelligent and flamboyant; genius music producer and lyricist; an integral part of creating the magic of The Four Seasons. 

Joe Pesci (Sides) – young, energetic; must be a good actor and a strong singer. 

Gyp DeCarlo (Sides) – tough, mafioso type; must be a good actor and strong singer. 

Mary Delgado (Sides) – a strong singer, actor, and dancer; Frankie’s wife; tough, “seen it all,” Italian, Jersey girl; she’s got a killer sense of humor; actor also plays a variety of other roles, including member of a 60s style girl group; strong belt useful; high straight tone soprano also useful but not required. 

Lorraine and Francie (Sides) – versatile actress, actors, and dancer with flexible vocal registers to play a variety of roles (the many girlfriends of The Four Seasons, etc); should fit well together a la 60s band Shangri-las and be believable as “tough-as-nails” Jersey girls; must be very comfortable with traditional four-part harmonies; must have strong belt.

Barry Belson/French Rap Star (Sides) (and other roles):  A strong actor & singer who plays various roles including Hal Miller. Tenor to high C ideally with a strong falsetto to G above high C; has the ability to riff in rhythm-and-blues style.

Norm Waxman & Others (Sides) : various roles (friends, producers, etc.), bari-tenor voice down to a strong low G (low E a big plus); guitar and/or drums a plus.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

MADAME (Sides) (Mezzo-Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Ella’s selfish stepmother. A vain and tyrannical climber. Deeply concerned with status and image and entirely dismissive of her stepdaughter. Comic timing essential. Traditional musical theatre character voice. Knowledge of ASL is a plus.
CHARLOTTE (Sides) (Mezzo-Soprano, Any Ethnicity) Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Deeply self-involved, attention seeker. Loud, brash and delights in being cocky. Lacks self-awareness and often the last one in on the joke. Excellent comic timing required. Traditional musical theatre character belt to F.  Knowledge of ASL is a plus.

This production uses ASL and Spoken English throughout.

**At this time, we are only looking for understudies. Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing actors will all be considered. Knowledge of ASL is helpful but not a prerequisite. 

**Additional onstage roles will be played by Apprentices (16-18 year old high schoolers) for this production. These positions will assist with onstage scenic/prop needs.

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND Website Header

Synopsis

An island of storytellers come together to tell a story of love, bravery, and strength…the story of the peasant girl, Ti Moune. An orphan, chosen by the Gods, is taken into a simple and loving family, Though content, she feels like she was destined for something more. After a terrible accident caused by a wicked storm, Ti Moune falls for a handsome, ailing, stranger whom she tries desperately to nurse back to health. She bargains with the Gods for his life, but to do so she must make the ultimate sacrifice. This sets our young peasant girl on the ultimate quest to answer the age old question, can love conquer death?

Mama Euralie (Sides) – Ti Moune’s adoptive mother,  fearful of social status and greatly protective of the family.

Andrea (Sides) – Andrea is Daniel’s refined and beautiful fiancée. Daniel and Andrea have been promised to each other by their parents since birth. She is sophisticated, educated and the exact opposite of Ti Moune. The actress performing the role should have a good voice and be able to move gracefully.
