With Halloween wrapping up and Thanksgiving just around the corner, stores are starting to stock up on Christmas decorations as invitations to holiday festivities are being sent out. The hustle and bustle of the season is about to kick into high gear. What better way to celebrate this wonderful time of year than with some old fashioned Christmas cheer?

Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma is preparing for the fifth production of LYRIC’S A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

How much do you really know about the beloved tale “A Christmas Carol”?

With the story turning 172 this year, this Christmas classic has been told and retold millions of times. Like the Ghost of Christmas Past, let’s travel back in time to learn about this magical novella.

Every good story starts with a good writer. Charles Dickens grew up poor in a large family, often being pulled out of school to help work off his fathers debts. Although Dickens childhood was cut short, working as an office boy gave him a jump start on his writing career. He began writing for newspapers and magazines before publishing his own short story. From then on, he began publishing major works every year or so including books such “Great Expectations” and “A Tale of Two Cities”. Dickens began writing “A Christmas Carol” in October 1843 and finished at the end of November, just in time for Christmas.

“A Christmas Carol” was a huge success, selling out of original copies in three days. Within six weeks, the book hit the London stage and ran for 40 nights before transferring to New York’s Park Theatre. Ten years after its initial publication, Dickens began public readings of the book and continued these readings until the year he died in 1870. Dickens would read all the characters in different voices, acting out the scenes as he went along.

Since being published, “A Christmas Carol” has been adapted for countless movies, television shows, musicals, plays, radio shows and more. Famous figures such as Mickey Mouse and the Muppets have created their own parodies based off the book.

Dickens had little knowledge of the impact his story would have for generations to come. It is said that his story brought on the popularity of Christmas as a major holiday and the idea of charitable giving during the season. He is also credited with with popularizing the phrase “Merry Christmas”

This will be the fifth year Lyric has been performing LYRIC’S A CHRISTMAS CAROL.
